Can I have this dance?

The Loved Ones (2009) is streaming free on Pluto.

Fear Street: Prom Queen releases on Netflix on May 23rd. If it’s like the previous Fear Street movies, Prom Queen will likely be chock full of references to classic horror movies of its type. So, if you need a refresher on some of the best prom horror movies, check out the ones listed here, all of which you can stream for free right now on Tubi and/or Pluto.

The Loved Ones (2009)

The Loved Ones (2009)
The Loved Ones was written and directed by Sean Byrne (The Devil’s Candy, Dangerous Animals). (pictured: Robin McLeavy as Lola)

Lola asks Brent to go with her to the school dance, but Brent politely refuses since he’s going with his girlfriend Holly. Then, before the dance, Lola and her father kidnap Brent and torture him in a twisted version of a prom. And it turns out Lola has done something like this before. The Loved Ones is surprisingly brutal and disturbing, both in theme and in what is shown on screen.

Dance of the Dead (2008)

Dance of the Dead (2008)
Dance of the Dead was released on DVD through Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Underground label. (pictured: Greyson Chadwick and Jared Kusnitz)

Dance of the Dead is a fun zombie comedy from director Gregg Bishop (Siren, 2016). The movie follows a group of teens who fight back against a horde of zombies on prom night. Along the way, the teens find an unusual way to keep the undead docile, but it might be too late to save everyone.

Prom Night (1980)

Prom Night (1980)
Prom Night is one of the films that cemented Jamie Lee Curtis’s status as a scream queen.

Prom Night is arguably THE prom horror movie (the other contender is at the bottom of this list). Six years ago, a young girl died in an accident while being mercilessly teased by four other kids. The bullies vowed to never tell anyone what happened, and someone else was blamed for the girl’s death. Now, the four kids are high school seniors, and they are all targeted by a killer on prom night.

Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987)

Prom Night II is a standalone sequel. (pictured: Lisa Schrage)

Prom Night II is completely different from the first Prom Night (because it started as a completely separate movie with a different title). Prom Night II is a supernatural slasher movie about the vengeful spirit of Mary Lou Maloney, a student who was burned to death while awaiting her crowning as prom queen. Three decades later, Mary Lou’s spirit still wants her crown. She also wants to make anyone and everyone pay for the pain she has had to endure.

Detention (2011)

Detention (2011)
Josh Hutcherson and Shanley Caswell star in Detention.

Detention moves through its story at a breakneck pace with clever dialogue, fast cuts, and tons of camera and editing tricks loaded into every minute. The story is a time-travel slasher comedy with a killer called CinderHella, but trying to explain the wacky, meandering plot any further than that is pointless. Just know that, yes, it does build up to a prom scene towards the end of the film.

Tragedy Girls (2017)

Tragedy Girls (2017)
Brianna Hildebrand and Alexandra Shipp star in Tragedy Girls.

Sadie and McKayla run a true crime blog, and they’re looking to get into the murder business themselves. So, they kidnap a serial killer with the hopes of having him teach them the tricks of the trade. Not everything goes according to plan, but murders certainly do happen, culminating in a prom-night massacre.

The Club (1994)

The Club (1994)
Andrea Roth (Rescue Me, The Collector) co-stars in The Club.

The Club is an odd, yet memorable, prom horror movie. A high school prom with a medieval theme is held at a huge gothic mansion/castle. At midnight, five students, a mysterious party crasher, and a scummy school counselor find themselves trapped inside the building (and trapped in time) while everyone else disappears. As they look for a way out, they begin to unravel a supernatural mystery that none of them may survive.

Carrie (1976)

Carrie (1976)
Carrie is easily one of the best adaptations of Stephen King’s writing. (pictured: Sissy Spacek)

No prom horror list would be complete without Carrie. Even if you’ve never seen it, you surely already know of the film’s iconic prom scene. And if you haven’t seen Carrie, you really have no excuse now that it is streaming free on Tubi. If you only watch one movie before Fear Street: Prom Queen, it should be Carrie.
