Here are the movies and shows that should be on your radar this weekend (10/6):
Totally Killer (2023). Streaming on Prime Video. Kiernan Shipka stars as a high school student who accidentally travels back in time to 1987 in this comedy horror movie. She befriends her teenage mother and tries to stop a series of gruesome murders that has haunted the town ever since. If you think this plot description sounds familiar, you aren’t alone.
V/H/S/85 (2023). Streaming on Shudder. The sixth installment in the V/H/S found footage franchise is out Friday on Shudder. Presented as a made-for-television documentary, 85 features five horror shorts set in the 1980s. Early reviews are great.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (2023). Streaming on Paramount+. A prequel to Pet Sematary (1983), Bloodlines takes place in 1969. Young Jud Crandall (Jackson White) hopes to leave Ludlow, Maine as soon as he graduates. His plans change when he discovers an ancient evil lurking in the small town.
Nowhere (2023). Streaming on Netflix. A Spanish dystopian thriller following a refugee named Mia (Anna Castillo) who tries to escape her war-torn country by hiding in a large shipping container on a cargo ship. Rough seas cause the container to fall overboard and Mia is trapped inside the container and lost at sea. She has only a cell phone with a limited battery to reach help — and she is pregnant and dangerously close to going into labor.
Appendage (2023). Streaming on Hulu. A comedy horror drama about a young fashion designer Hannah (Hadley Robinson) stressed by the pressure to succeed and her own perfectionism. Hannah’s life begins to spiral when her dark thoughts manifest into something grotesque. Check out our interview with director Anna Zlokovic here.
Horror in the High Desert (2021). Streaming on Tubi. Framed as a faux documentary, this is essentially a found footage horror movie about an experienced outdoorsman who vanished into the Nevada wilderness. Friends and family are interviewed and the man’s gruesome fate is revealed. A sequel, Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva (2023), is also streaming free on Tubi.
Tales of the Walking Dead (2022). Streaming on AMC+. This Walking Dead spinoff series came out last year and it seems like everyone except hardcore Dead-heads missed it. Each episode of the anthology series tells a different story about a Walking Dead character or a completely new character. Episode 2 might be the strongest of the season because it guest stars Parker Posey as a narcissistic boss who becomes even more annoying when she is stuck in a time loop with her assistant (Jillian Bell) as the zombie apocalypse begins. With some fun celebrity cameos, Tales of the Walking Dead feels like a handful of old school Tales from the Crypt episodes.
In theaters is David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer, Tom DeLonge’s debut, Monsters of California, and Julia Garner vacation thriller The Royal Hotel.
