Here are the movies and shows that should be on your radar this weekend (1/19):
Storm Warning (2007). Streaming on Freevee. This is a decent Australian horror movie that most people haven’t heard of. The formulaic plot follows a young couple who get lost in a swamp and then head to a nearby farmhouse for help — and meet deranged killers instead. For fans of late 80s and early 90s horror movies, this might be a hit for you as the script was originally written in that time period.
Prisoners (2013). Streaming on Netflix. Leaving Netflix soon is this mystery thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve about a man (Hugh Jackman) whose daughter is kidnapped. In his desperation to get her back, he goes to extreme (and we mean EXTREME) lengths. With a 4.3 out of 5 rating on Letterboxd, this one is one of the best kidnapping movies of all time and definitely worth the watch.
American Nightmare (2024). Streaming on Netflix. A new 3-part docuseries from Netflix delving into the story of Aaron Quinn and Denise Huskins. The couple were victims of a home invasion in 2015 which culminated in Denise’s kidnapping. Two days later, the perpetrators released Denise and she went home to accusations that the couple staged the entire crime. Some say she’s the real life Amy Dunne from Gone Girl.
The Traitors (Season 2). Streaming on Peacock. If you’ve ever wanted to watch a murder mystery reality show, The Traitors will scratch that itch. Hosted by Alan Cumming, the show follows a group of reality stars staying in a Scottish castle. Like the party game “Mafia”, guests are either given the role of “faithful” or “traitors” and contestants are “murdered” (eliminated) by the secret group of traitors. There are four episodes out and new episodes drop on Thursdays.
Marrowbone (2017). Streaming on Peacock. This psychological horror/drama movie follows a group of children (including Anya Taylor-Joy and Mia Goth) who conceal their mother’s death in order to not be separated. While they struggle to survive, they are plagued by a ghostly presence in the home. Don’t look up details for this film, it’s got a great twist-ending.
