Here are the movies that should be on your radar this weekend (12/22):
Medusa (2022). Streaming on Prime Video. This is slept on Brazilian horror movie is liked Saved! (2004) mixed with Watcher (2022). It is visually beautiful and has a dreamy aesthetic but also has funny moments where the film is satirizing religion (especially evangelical Christianity and Christian influencers). Medusa follows a group of religious teen girls who don masks and prowl the streets at night for sinners to attack. When one of the girls is disfigured while playing vigilante, her new path puts her at odds with her religious friends. Note: there are a few recent movies titled ‘Medusa’ so make sure you pick the one directed by Anita Rocha da Silveira, it’s labeled (2022) on Prime Video but (2021) elsewhere.
The Children (2009). Streaming on Freevee. A fun Christmas horror movie about a group of friends vacationing over Christmas together. A relaxing getaway turns scary when the adults realize that something is wrong with the children. This has some great creepy kid moments.
Black Swan (2010). Streaming on Netflix. Darren Aronofsky’s psychological horror masterpiece is new on Netflix. Natalie Portman stars as a ballerina hoping to attain perfection and Mila Kunis as her imperfect but captivating understudy.
P2 (2007). Streaming on Freevee. A wonderful Christmas horror movie about a woman working late on Christmas Eve. When she gets to the abandoned parking garage, she discovers she is locked in. At first it seems like an accident, but slowly the woman realizes the “helpful security guard” is anything but. You’ll never think of the song ‘Blue Christmas’ the same way again.
Black Christmas (1974). Streaming on Freevee. This is the best Christmas horror movie of all time. Don’t tell anyone you haven’t seen the original Black Christmas! As campus empties for the holiday break, a group of sorority girls are stalked by a mysterious stranger.
