Here are the movies and shows that should be on your radar this weekend (1/12):
Destroy All Neighbors (2024). Streaming on Shudder. A comedy horror movie about a struggling prog-rock musician (Jonah Ray Rodrigues) wants to make it big but no one in his life believes in him. After an incident with his new neighbor (Alex Winter), the musicians journey towards greatness becomes even more difficult.
The Passenger (2023). Streaming on Prime Video. A thriller (or violent drama) following a terminally mild-mannered fast food worker, Randy (Johnny Berchtold), who becomes a witness to a shocking crime. Taken hostage by a gun-wielding narcissist (Kyle Gallner), Randy goes on a scary (but healing?) journey. The Passenger is a little slow (especially if you are expecting horror) but a decent watch if the actors or plot interests you.
Trapped (2002). Streaming on Netflix. A randomly star-studded thriller with Charlize Theron, Stuart Townsend, Courtney Love, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Fanning and Colleen Camp. A wealthy family is targeted for a kidnapping for ransom plot but the daughter’s asthma and the parents’ ingenuity causes trouble for the kidnappers. Trapped didn’t get great reviews but it’s a fun home invasion movie for fans of the subgenre.
High Tension (2002). Streaming on Tubi. A very violent and scary French horror movie (so, subtitles) about two female friends spending a break from school at one of the women’s family farm in the country. In one of the most suspenseful and horrific home invasion scenes in cinema history (on par with another French horror movie, Inside), the idyllic trip turns into a nightmare.
True Detective: Night Country. Streaming on Max. Premiering on Sunday (Jan 14), the fourth season of True Detective stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two Alaska detectives who investigate the mysterious disappearance of eight men at a research station. The three previous seasons are also available to stream on Max.
